THE WEDDING PEOPLE by Alison Espach

The Wedding People by Alison Espach is about Phoebe, a woman who has hit rock bottom and leaves her life in St. Louis behind to go to her dream hotel in Newport RI to kill herself. When she gets there, she discovers that she is the only hotel guest there who is not part of an extravagant weeklong wedding planned by bridezilla Lila. When Lila figures out why Phoebe is there, she inserts herself into Phoebe’s life to try to prevent a suicide from ruining her perfect wedding week. Needless to say, Phoebe chooses not to end her life, and instead finds herself entwined in the lives of the people attending the wedding. Over the course of the week, she rebuilds her own confidence, helps others confront the secrets they’ve been carrying, and reorients her life. This was a popular book this summer, and I can see why. It’s goes deeper than a typical feel-good summer read, with some real emotions at stake. I rolled my eyes at a few plot points, but I thought this was a decent read. Like an actual weeklong wedding, it felt a little too long, but I enjoyed the flashbacks to Phoebe’s marriage and the backstory of how she ended up in Rhode Island. I listened to this one on audio and it kept me interested.
