I am having a hard time focusing on books these days – ironic – as the bookstore opening is just a few days away. I keep picking up books and putting them down. One that I did manage to finish last month was Like Mother Like Mother by Susan Rieger. It’s about three generations of women/mothers – Zelda, an abused wife living in Detroit; Lila, her very successful daughter who is an editor at a Washington, DC newspaper; and Grace, one of Lila’s three daughters. Zelda died in a mental hospital when Lila was young, which shaped her into the driven and markedly un-maternal woman she became. Many years later, Lila, trying to understand her mother, decides to research Zelda’s life and find out some surprising truths about her family. It has been a week since I finished this book, and I am still not sure what to say about it. It is very much an internal, character-driven novel in which not a lot happens but everything is analyzed, over and over. I didn’t like any of the characters, nor did I find them so interesting that I wanted to invest in that much analysis. So this one was just OK for me. Bonus points for the DC setting.
