I’m not much of a foodie, and other than owning a few Barefoot Contessa cookbooks, I didn’t know much about Ina Garten before reading her new memoir, Be Ready When The Luck Happens. But it was our book club’s latest pick, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Garten is a really interesting woman who overcame a difficult childhood to become an extremely successful cookbook author and TV personality. Be Ready When The Luck Happens traces her life from growing up in New York, meeting her (also now famous) husband Jeffrey, living in DC and Paris and buying the first Barefoot Contessa store in the Hamptons. Garten takes us through her many business decisions and how she trusted her instincts at different forks in the road. As a small business owner (!), I especially loved those parts. But the whole book was really good, positive, and interesting. I did it on audio and loved hearing her words in Garten’s voice. She isn’t necessarily the most skilled narrator, but it was worth it. The best takeaway from the memoir: Do what you love.
