I haven’t read anything by Liane Moriarty in a long time, but I was in the mood for something that would grab me, so I picked up her latest novel, Here One Moment. It opens on a plane ride from Hobart to Sydney. The short flight has been delayed, and shortly after takeoff, an older woman starts walking up and down the aisle telling strangers when they will die, and how. These unsolicited announcements understandably cause great concern among the passengers, who eventually deplane and go back to their lives, changed by the woman’s dire predictions. Here One Moment explores the woman’s backstory and how she came to the point where she predicted random deaths on an airplane, alternating with individual stories of six of the people on the plane who received death predictions. Will they alter their lives in order to avoid their fates? Will her predictions start to come true? I’m not sure this book totally hung together in the end, but it kept my attention, and Moriarty is an excellent storyteller. She raised some interesting questions about fate and what motivates us to to change course and pursue our true loves and passions. I listened to Here One Moment on audio, and enjoyed the group of narrators that embodied these characters.
