Children’s Book: QUEEN VERNITA’S VISITORS by Dawn Menge

Vernita I received a review copy of a new children's book called Queen Vernita's Visitors, by Dawn Menge. It's a cute idea – a lonely queen invites twelve friends to visit her during the twelve months of the year. The book lists all of the activities they did during the time they were together – things in the snow, board games, etc.

This is a nice concept, and it's a good tool for kids who are learning the months and the number of days in each month. But I must confess that I found it a bit tedious to read. It's basically made up of lists of activities – no rhyming to make them fun to read, no plot really. It was one of the first books we didn't finish reading. I wonder if my girls are a little too young for it (4 1/2) – they might not have grasped that every month had a theme, nor do they really know the months in order yet. It might be more suitable for older kids.

The illustrations are bright and colorful, and Queen Vernita's kingdom is fun to explore.
