I haven’t read anything by McEwan yet. I’m always tempted but haven’t picked him up yet. Great review. Certainly things to keep in mind. “High highs and low lows” sounds like a great summary.

McEwan is all about detail. He goes a bit overboard in all of his novels, except maybe On Chesil Beach but that was a really short one.

I thought I had read this one, but I was thinking of The Innocent, which was really odd. I just read Sweet Tooth, review posts soon and it too, had a tone of detail but the ending redeemed it for me.

I took a look at the other McEwan novels that I have not read and there are sever. I really thought I had read more from him.

That’s how I’ve always found McEwan’s writing so I generally don’t seek out his books.

Hmm, not exactly a ringing endorsement, and a shame that a book with such high highs didn’t at least do better on the lows.

Ian McEwan has been on my list for a while, but having never read him at all, it sounds like I had best start with Atonement before trying his other books.
